Tsinghua art workshop creators explore symbiosis of all things - Yahoo Finance

    BEIJING, Dec. 30, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- This is a report from China.org.cn.

A student tests VR equipment during the workshop process.
A student tests VR equipment during the workshop process.

On Dec. 17, audiences worldwide toured an online exhibition at the Academy of Arts and Design of Tsinghua University (AADTHU), displaying numerous innovative and avant-garde pieces, such as space capsules, micro-environments, and ocean installations. These works were shown in the Thematic Exhibitions section, created by interdisciplinary workshops, part of the 2022 Tsinghua International Conference on Art & Design Education (ICADE 2022).

With the theme of "The Symbiosis of All Things," the "Re: Actor International Art & Design Workshops" focuses on the future environment and survival of human beings. Teachers from the painting, sculpture, environmental art design, industrial design, and information art & design departments of AADTHU, together with extramural experts in sociology, oceanography, biology, computer technology, aerospace, and other fields, formed a strong team of tutors. In the five disciplines of artificial environment, marine environment, urban environment, digital environment, and space environment, the interdisciplinary graduate team made collaborative innovations in a four-week intensive work environment.

They integrated art and technology, colliding and exploring new design languages and expressions before finally making a youthful response to environmental and social situations surrounding "The Symbiosis of All Things." The result was more than 30 artworks in animation, products, VR games, installation art, interactive images, service systems, parametric buildings, and other forms.

In the "Manufactured Environment: The Artistic Translation" workshop exhibition, students from different majors, such as painting, sculpture, design, and electronics, created their own "microenvironment" through painting, pictures, images, devices, and other forms using autumnal elements, such as orange hues and leaves, AADTHU's professor Li Tianyuan introduced.

The 15 pieces reflect both thinking and practice, artistic creativity and technological expansion, with their artistic creations and technologies echoing and complementing each other.

"Artistic creations have the magic power to improve living spaces and then affect emotions and reshape thoughts so that people can open a window to see the vast spiritual world," Li said.

As part of the "Ark Plan: Floating Cities and Life" exhibition, visitors could enjoy a floating concert on the ocean, integrating architecture, nature, and music. The installations explore the relationship between humanity and the ocean and also human impact on the ocean. The three works also dissect how seaside residents escape environmental crises and how humans can coexist with new ocean environments, given the significant changes the planet's climate is facing.

Tu Shan, associate research fellow and senior engineer at AADTHU, said the works integrated different design languages as well as explained, criticized, and reflected on the exhibition theme of the "Ark Plan" from different dimensions, demonstrating the students' thinking, emotions, and good wishes for the marine environment.

In the "Habitat for All: Biodiversity Around Us" exhibition, four artworks attempt to portray an upgraded future urban environment to protect biodiversity, including building a habitat for bees, shelters for little animals, making ecological transformations to Tsinghua's waterways, and creating a symbiotic system for plants and humans, AADTHU's professor Liu Xin said.

"These works explore the boundaries and distances between people and other living things in a city environment, providing inspiration, direction, and exploratory paths for the integration of biodiverse habitat design in urban planning and construction. By empowering ecological construction with artistic designs, small creatures can share the same land with busy urbanites and live and prosper together with human beings," he said.

The "Digital Human Factory: Virtual Survival Guide" exhibition focuses on the avatars and living environment of human beings in the digital world. Five VR works re-examine and re-explore topics such as symbiotic relationships, cultural diversity, and equal rights, transposing them from the real world into the metaverse, realizing a change of perspectives, and bringing different feelings and experiences to audiences. Five VR virtual works are "stored" in the exhibition's huge matrix-like world, which symbolizes the data computing and storage space of the metaverse.

"Entering the information age, people began to live a new form of digital life. The human body is being disassembled into 'digital components' by smartphones and wearables, and lives in digital spaces in a digital way," AADTHU's associate professor Mi Haipeng said as he critiqued students' works.

"In the shuttle back and forth between the virtual world and the real world, the boundaries between real and virtual, digital and physical are constantly broken, and artistic designs are also ushered into a wider space for development."

In the "Extraterrestrial Home: Space Architecture and Interaction" exhibition, teachers and students imagine what space capsules may one day look like for interstellar travel, including a meditation room, ice rink, garden, and sleeping cabin.

AADTHU's associate professor Shi Danqing said the four designs for the "space capsules" are full of artistic imagination and scientific precision.

"They are the result of bold imagination and careful verification from the main student creatives. They are also the sparks of art and technology colliding in outer space."

After the virtual tour, the International Students' Forum was held on Dec. 17, with doctoral students from all over the world gathered online to discuss current challenges and future directions in the field of art and design. The forum received more than 100 contributions from over 30 universities in various countries around the world, including China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, and the United Kingdom. Finally, 52 papers were shortlisted, of which 21 authors of the best papers gave keynote speeches on the day of the forum.

How To Download And Play ‘Rocket League’ Steam Workshop Maps - Forbes

Wilkinson & Rivera: Wallpaper* Future Icons - Wallpaper*

Grant Wilkinson and Teresa Rivera are the duo behind furniture studio Wilkinson & Rivera. Both attracted to woodworking, Rivera learned by assisting a Brooklyn cabinetmaker and Wilkinson approached the craft at Bellerby & Co. Globemakers in London (‘mostly because I knew [wood] was Teresa’s thing and I was trying to impress her’, he explains).

Having studied at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and London’s Camberwell College of Arts respectively, they opened their workshop and collaborative practice in 2020 after further experiences in set design and furniture sourcing, and developed a unique style informed by classic furniture with a twist.

Wilkinson & Rivera's furniture pieces offer a contemporary, slightly surrealist twist on furniture classics: take the 'Windsor', a piece that faithfully reproduces the forms of the 16th-century chair with the addition of a serpentine silhouette. Similarly, 'La Silla' is inspired by the classic Queen Anne chair, with the same wiggly motif, and this approach is taken to the highest level with the ‘Welsh Stick Chairs’; featuring hand-carved twists and a natural black finish achieved through scorching the wood.

Most recently, the duo started a collaboration with London furniture emporium SCP, creating the 'Of Nature' collection (unveiled at London Design Festival 2022).Inspired by Verb List, an artwork from 1967 by the radical American sculptor Richard Serra, the collection features four chair designs, nodding to Serra’s handwritten compendium of what he called 'actions to relate to oneself, material, place, and process'). The four designs (each connecting the form to an action and thus called 'Puffed', 'Wilted', 'Whipped', and 'Rippled') are characterised by the studio's original take on classic forms, resulting in a mix of nostalgia, technical experimentation and organic forms.

‘We like the sense of illusion our work brings – our response to classical hardwood furniture has a tendency towards the surreal,’ says Wilkinson. To create their pieces, they use a mix of steam-bending, carving and weaving. ‘We look at the process and how it evokes action,’ continues Rivera. ‘By starting with movement or action, we uncover interesting forms to investigate. We keep distorting them until we find something suitably weird and pleasing.’

Although the pair now hope to branch out into new materials (such as stone and metal, overlapped with woodworking), wood maintains a special place for the studio: ‘You could dedicate your entire life to understanding wood and only skim the surface,’ explains Wilkinson. ‘The timber we work with has come from trees much older than us – there’s a significance to using it that keeps you honest.’

Games Workshop Rumor Engine: ...So I Started Blastin' - BoLS

This week’s Rumor Engine has both barrels ready to blast. Or is it that simple? Take a look and see what you can see from Games Workshop.

It’s another Tuesday which means it’s time for another Rumor Engine from Games Workshop. What could it possibly be? It sure looks like a pair of gun barrels…or is it something else?

    via Warhammer Community

“We’ve got a foolproof method for figuring out this week’s Rumour Engine image. Close one eye, squint with the other, and tilt your head 43 degrees to the right. Take a step back… yes… that’s it. What a vision!”

Well, I tried there method to see what else I could see and…it didn’t work for me. But maybe it worked for you. To me, this sure looks like a pair of Autocannon barrels. But wait…that’s actually NOT all.

If you look REAL close, you can see there’s a third barrel there! That’s actually a big clue.

That sure reminds me of the guns on the Hekaton Land Fortress.

I’m not saying it’s 100% the same gun but this certainly makes me think this is Leagues of Votann related or at the very least Imperial or Imperial adjacent. Which, ya know, Autocannon/Autoguns are that anyhow.

With some of the other teases we’ve seen so far, I’m starting to think we might have some more Leagues of Votann miniatures coming next year. When? Unclear. Could be a month away…could be a year or more! That’s the thing about the Rumor Engines. You never really know when they are going to get revealed.

What do you think? Could this be a Leagues of Votann tease or something else? Drop your theories in the comments and let us know why.

    This isn’t a double blaster situation…it’s more of a Tri-gun type thing.

Amazon, Games Workshop announce Warhammer 40k film deal - The Register

Amazon has reached into the Warp and pulled out an "agreement in principle" with Warhammer maker Games Workshop (GW) that would give it film, television and merchandising rights to the company's sci-fi Warhammer 40,000 franchise.

It also found recently projectless actor Henry Cavill in there, who has signed on to star and executive produce a new series based in the "grimdark" universe.

Games Workshop made clear it hadn't formally entered into a contract with the Bezos-founded megacorp, but had only "reached agreement on material commercial terms" that were wholly dependent on contract negotiations, which GW said the parties are working towards.

That doesn't mean there will necessarily be a long wait until we can expect the grim darkness of the far future to reach our screens. "In advance of contracts being entered into, Amazon will be commencing certain development activities (such as holding preliminary discussions with writers) in order to facilitate the project," Games Workshop said.

The only sign of what will come from the partnership is GW's statement that it initially intends to grant rights to just the Warhammer 40k universe, leaving the path open for a future trip to the Old World, too.

For those unfamiliar with the world of Warhammer 40,000, it takes place in, unsurprisingly, the 41st millennium, far into the distant future of our world. Human civilization has stagnated into an unending dark age, and is beset on all sides by hostile aliens and Warhammer's perennial baddies, the Chaos Gods.

Warhammer, both the original fantasy variant and the futuristic 40k setting, is a tabletop war game in which players paint miniatures of their chosen armies and engage in battles. The franchises have also spawned plenty of video games, novelizations and other media, and Games Workshop has been notoriously protective of its IPs over the years.

Warhammer 40k last graced the screen in 2010 with a CG movie about the Ultramarines chapter of 40k's iconic Space Marine characters.

    God-Emperor Cavill?

Actor Henry Cavill, known for film roles including Superman and titular character Geralt in the Netflix adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski's Witcher book series, has plenty of geek cred – including nearly missing out on being cast as Superman because he missed a phone call while raiding in World of Warcraft – and the actor is also a well-known Warhammer enthusiast, having posted many of his mini painting projects on social media.

Cavill is departing The Witcher after the upcoming third season, and the actor recently announced he wouldn't be returning to the Superman franchise either. With time on his hands, he says he's ready to jump into the Warhammer universe, which he's loved since he was a boy.

"I couldn't be more grateful for all the hard work put in by Vertigo [Entertainment], Amazon Studios and Games Workshop to make this happen. One step closer to making a nigh on lifelong dream come true," Cavill said.

Vertigo Entertainment partnered with Cavill "to secure the coveted IP and deliver it to Amazon Studios," and will also serve as an executive producer. "The opportunity to shepherd this cinematic universe from its inception is quite the honour and the responsibility," Cavill said.

Cavill had originally signed on for seven seasons of The Witcher and expressed excitement at the project, saying: "As long as we can keep telling great stories which honor Sapkowski's work," he was willing to keep making the series.

Rumors of dissatisfaction at the course of Netflix's adaptation have swirled around Cavill's departure, which makes his executive producer credit on Amazon's Warhammer project and statement of "shepherding" the franchise all the more interesting.

The role Cavill will take on screen remains unknown – The Emperor of Man, perhaps? Then again, if he wants to get back to his monster hunting roots, Cavill would be sure to find some excitement slinging a bolter in the depths of one of Necromunda's mutant-plagued hive cities. ®

Warhammer to be made into movie and TV show, starring Superman actor Henry Cavill - BBC

    Henry CavillReuters

Warhammer, the popular miniature table-top wargame, is to be made into a movie and TV show, starring Henry Cavill.

The ex-Superman actor will also executive produce the adaptation, which he called a "lifelong dream come true".

UK firm Games Workshop, which makes the game, said on Friday it has "reached an agreement in principle" for Amazon to develop its intellectual property.

The project will initially involve developing the Warhammer 40,000 universe, it confirmed.

The news comes just days after Cavill confirmed he will not be returning to play Superman in the DC Comics universe.

Cavill has previously spoken about his enthusiasm for Warhammer, a fantasy war game where players paint intricate miniature figures and have them battle each other.

In a statement on Friday, the British actor, 39, said: "I have loved Warhammer since I was a boy, making this moment truly special for me. The opportunity to shepherd this cinematic universe from its inception is quite the honour and the responsibility."

Another popular table-top gaming franchise Dungeons and Dragons has its own new movie coming next year, starring Chris Pine.

The Warhammer deal is still to be officially confirmed and a further announcement will be made "in due course", the Nottingham-based games company noted.

Founded by friends in London in 1975, as a company selling board games and writing a fanzine for roleplaying adventures, Games Workshop has grown into the dominant player in the miniature wargaming world.

With shops in high streets and shopping malls across the globe Games Workshop is known, in the main, for producing Warhammer 40,000 and Age of Sigmar miniature games.

To play, models and terrain need to be assembled and (often with great artistry) painted. They are used on a table-top where friends can then do battle in fantastical worlds, telling stories based on 40 years' worth of rules and backstory, created especially for the games.

Despite its stores being closed during lockdown its sales soared - meaning the company's shares at one point, it's reported, were even outperforming those of Tesla.

However, Games Workshop has been more than just a miniatures company for years. It has its own book publishing division, and there have been many video game adaptations made - in-house anime, deals with Marvel Comics and toy manufacturers - all based upon the worlds created to host table-top battles.

Today's news of a TV series deal is no surprise therefore, because Games Workshop has been carefully leveraging its intellectual property for a long time. Similarly to how comic book houses are no longer just the creators of comics, but have instead taken over Hollywood.

Previous attempts to get a high-end Warhammer adaptation over the line have failed, leaving endless discussion in fan forums and on social media as to who could play the setting's famous characters.

There's a lot of speculation that Warhammer fan Henry Cavill, no longer in-line to continue as Superman on the silver screen, could be a key part of this adaptation. Perhaps there could be roles for other celebrity 40k fans Ed Sheeran and Vin Diesel?

Fans will hope that this isn't another false dawn, and that the creators of this adaptation take good care of worlds that they know and love - despite the Games Workshop depiction of the 41st Millennium being exceedingly grim.

Financial analyst Andrew Wade, from Jefferies, told the AFP news agency this was "very exciting news" for Games Workshop, whose share price rose on Friday as a result.

"Licensing income has built strongly in recent years, from £2m in full-year 2015 to around £17m in full-year 2023, but we saw a more limited progression ahead, believing that only a major film deal would support another step-change," he said.

"With today's news, that is now a very real possibility.

"Moreover, a mainstream TV/film product could be game-changing in terms of Warhammer's brand reach and awareness."

Elsewhere on Friday, it was also announced the acclaimed 2019 action video game Death Stranding will also be adapted for the silver screen, according to its Japanese creator Hideo Kojima.

In a statement, Kojima, who will co-produce the film, called the decision "a pivotal moment for the franchise.

The PlayStation and PC game is set in the US following a catastrophic event which caused destructive creatures to start roaming the planet.
