Fairfield workshop helps folks swap New Year's Resolutions for New Year's Intention's - ktvo.com

The ritual of setting New Year’s Resolutions can feel strict and somewhat temporary.

Writers Alison Stimson and Joon Breffle feel that setting New Year’s intentions instead can bring more kindness to the ritual.

Breffle told KTVO, “We're hoping to create a place where we can really look back on our last year, reflect on our last year with like big arms of love and acceptance and like fully honor how we've shown up throughout the year and then also throughout that space really look deep, deeper at what we want to cultivate."

The pair hosted a workshop ahead of New Year's Eve that used exercises and connection activities with writing prompts to help participants reflect on the past year and use that to determine their intentions for 2024.

Breffle says that writing is a way to connect the body and mind and helps you get to know yourself more.

While the reflections aspect of the workshop was more individualized, Stimson says setting intentions with yourself and others in mind can be beneficial.

“One thing that's really important is that we're setting intentions not purely just for ourselves, like go to the gym or whatever, but intentions that involve other people and that shared accountability as well as the more selfless aspect of it, is an important part of being able to keep this because we keep intentions as a community,” explained Stimson.

They suggest using the prompts to keep track of your reflections and intentions once a month.

Breffle shared some of the prompts for anyone who would like to try intention setting at home.

“One is what is a story you have fiercely on repeat that will continue forever until you decide to change something? So this is one I think that would be really good to help, kind of like bring us into the present moment and like show kindness to ourselves.”

A similar prompt was to write about the past year as a story, including moments of growth and success, struggle and stagnation.

Other prompts ask you to reflect on decisions, boundaries, or traits that served you this past year, what advice you would give to your past self, what things you would like to receive, and what things you would like to give more of in the next year.
